Typical work from the 1960s by the Japanese artist Kumi Sugai, who is considered one of the most important representatives of modern Japanese art; his color lithographs from the 1960s fetch up to €1,700 at international auctions.

In the 1950s Kumi Sugai’s works were still clearly influenced by abstract expressionism in their dynamic brushstroke. But during the 1960s his compositions solidify to emblem-like forms in rounded, more or less oval in shapes. Often their interior is designed by a carefully and controlled executed rib structure. The present lithograph which was created in 1965 and published in 1966 by the Gallery Brusberg in Hannover is thus a very characteristic work of this creative period.

The lithograph in colors is signed and dated lower right in pencil ‘Sugai 65’. The sheet is overall somewhat darkened and unfresh with small water and tiny glue stains, small creases and losses in the paper surface in the upper right corner. The image measures 66.8 x 54.2 cm, the sheet 76.4 x 56.5 cm.

Kumi Sugai (1919-1996)

Kumi Sugai was born in 1919 in Kobe, Japan, and is one of the most important proponents of the post-war period in modern Japanese art and abstract painting. In the late 1940s, Sugai increasingly began dealing with modern Western painting. The works by Jackson Pollock, Paul Klee, Joan Miró and Max Ernst were fascinating to him. In 1952, Sugai moved to Paris and began studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He received international attention in the 1950s for his paintings and sculptures and took part at the documenta II (1959) and the documenta III (1964) in Kassel. In 1962, he was awarded the gold medal of the Venice Biennale. Numerous other international exhibitions and awards followed. (fea)
