This collection of five lithographs, which were published between 1960 and 1978 at Griffelkunst-association in Hamburg, comprises the following titles: ‘Das Beutestück‘ (Dorsch 343, Griffelkunst 211 C3), ‘Hinterm Rücken‘ (Dorsch 1070, Griffelkunst E 23), ‘Napoleon und der russische Winter‘ (Dorsch 1754, Griffelkunst E 70), ‘Der Schachspieler(II)‘, (Dorsch 2114, Griffelkunst 201 A2) and ‘Ein Student wird gefeuert‘ (Dorsch 2350, Griffelkunst 211 C1).

The five lithographs are each signed lower right in pencil resp. ballpoint ‘A. Paul Weber’, three sheets are typographically dated in the stone. All five sheets are darkened along the sheet edges, thereof one additionally in the margins. One sheet shows significant creases in the lower margin, another is folded along the side edges about 1.5 cm wide to verso. The images measure from 27.3 x 25.5 cm to 29 x 39.5 cm, the sheets from 65 x 50 cm to 65.3 x 53.4 cm.

A. Paul Weber (1893-1980)

A. Paul Weber attended for a short period of time the Kunstgewerbeschule Erfurt. He was a member of the Romanticist youth movement ‘Jung-Wandervogel’. During many hikes with the group he received a lot of inspiration for the nature depictions in his works and he started creating his first autodidactic lithographs. He served in the military service during the First World War. He was able to work as a draughtsman at the Eastern frontier for the magazine of the 10th Army.

A large number of designs for book illustrations of Reineke Fucks, Hans Sachs, Till Eulenspiegel and Münchhausen are his. He was the publisher of the magazine ‘Kritischer Kalender’. Additionally, he worked for Ernst Niekisch’s magazine ‘Widerstand’ (= opposition), which was connected to an opposition movement in the scope of which Weber was arrested in 1937 and came to the concentration camp in Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel; he then was imprisoned for six months in Berlin and Nuremberg. Weber also had to serve in the military in the Second World War. In 1971, he was honored with the Große Verdienstkreuz and got appointed as a professor. In 1973, the A. Paul Weber-Museum opened on the Dome peninsula of Ratzeburg. (fea)
