The cane is 35” in length, with a 3½” curved handle of gold in which are mounted two pieces of California gold quartz, each approximately ½x¾”. The handle is engraved with intricate and attractive designs so typical of the fine work done by San Francisco jewelers and silversmiths of the period. The shaft appears to be polished Rosewood and ends with a brass cap at the foot.
A California gold quartz cane presented on August 28, 1875 to Marcus Derkheim Boruck Esq. (1834-1895) in San Francisco by a J.C.B. (initials only), and fancifully engraved as such. Marcus Derkheim Boruck Esq., who was married to Annie Holmes in 1869, was a prominent San Francisco Republican, politician and co-publisher and partner with C.M. Chase of the California Spirit of the Times, at 621 Sansome Street. Boruck was also Secretary of the Republican State Central Committee, Director of the California Board of Agriculture in 1875, and it’s president in 1878. From 1855-1896 he was the publisher of the Fireman's Journal, California Assembly Clerk in 1865 & 1871, Secretary of the California Senate 1880-1881 and the private Secretary to Governor Waterman in 1887.
