This lot comprises eight bottles of 1982 vintage Pavillon Rouge, the second wine of ChĆ¢teau Margaux, from the appellation of the same name in Bordeaux.

Margaux is located in MĆ©doc and is one the finest appellations in France. Ernest Hemingway was so fond of Margaux wine that he named his daughter after it. The most widely used grape variety is Cabernet Sauvignon, which is always blended with other varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The wines are long-lasting and should only be savored after several years of proper storage.

1982 was a very special vintage in Bordeaux. It is one of those truly great vintages, like 1945 and 1961, which will be talked about for decades to come. American wine critic Robert Parker made a name for himself when he described this vintage as outstanding, contradicting the opinion of many other wine critics. Time proved him right and sealed his reputation as the most influential wine critic in the world.

The 1982 vintage Pavillon Rouge was rated 92 points by James Suckling for Wine Spectator in 1988.

The fill levels are excellent (into neck). The labels are slightly soiled and some are slightly damaged; the capsules are in perfect condition.

ChĆ¢teau Margaux

ChĆ¢teau Margaux is a renowned wine-growing estate belonging to the appellation of the same name, in the MĆ©doc region in Bordeaux. It is one of just four wines to achieve Premier Cru (first growth) status in the Bordeaux Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. It is located on some of the best wine-growing land in MĆ©doc; the earth is highly calciferous and consists of a layer of 4-11 cm of pebble stone, forcing the grapevines to form deep roots, allowing them to absorb more nutrients.

Of the 99 hectares of vineyards, 87 hectares are reserved for red wine production, planted with 75 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 % Merlot and 5 % Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. 12 hectares are planted with Sauvignon Blanc, used to make the Pavillon Blanc white wine. The red wine is prepared according to traditional procedures: after storing them on the mash in wooden vats, the wine matures in oak barrels over a period of 18-24 months, before being bottled unfiltered. Only 40-60 % of this is declared Grand Vin, the remainder is sold as Pavillon Rouge.
