This lot comprises one bottle of 1961 vintage Château Ausone from the Saint-Émilion appellation in Bordeaux.
Saint Émilion is next to Pomerol one of the best-known appellations on the right river bank of the Gironde. Merlot is the predominant grape variety here. As in Graves, Saint Émilion has its own classification for the wines produced there, updated approximately every ten years; the last time being in 2012.
1961 is a legendary vintage – one of the best in the history of Bordeaux. The harvest was rather small and began early compared to other vintages, and the wines of this vintage are very rare today.
The 1961 vintage Ausone was rated 88 points by Robert Parker in 1998. It was given a core of 89 points in a 1996 issue of Wine Spectator. René Gabriel last rated the wine 19 out of 20 points in 2012.
The fill level is excellent (top shoulder). The label is soiled and damaged; the capsule is in perfect condition.
