Religious Vignette with Wax DollsÂ
Continental (French), late 19th-early 20th century. A religious vignette with a nun kneeling in front of an altar, the doll having a wax head with hand-painted and molded facial features, its body adorned with a brown wool robe, a white cotton habit, and a beaded rosary with an embossed brass medallion, the altar covered by a white linen cloth and trimmed in lace, the top displaying two vases of flowers and a wax representation of the baby Jesus. The walls of the vignette decorated with crosses, pictures of the Passion of Christ, icons of the Virgin Mary, and religious mottos handwritten in French, all housed within a cardboard box covered with decorative paper and edged in twisted cords; ht. 15.75, wd. 13.5, dp. 5.5 in.
