Description
Greece colony of Canosa, southern Italy, Ca 4th century BCE - acquired in Turkey. Quite exceptional pottery statuette of Eros, done in a Canosan workshop as noted by the added pink, white and blue pigments. Eros stands with right hip slightly forward, wings outstretched on his back, curly hairdo painted blue, holding fillet in his left hand this painted pink, torch held in his right hand. 9-1/2" H.
Provenance: Ex-private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures.
