Description
Roman Empire, found at the famous site of Teos on the Ionian Coast, Ca 1st century CE. Wonderful marble sculpture of the man-goat Pan. Shown nude, standing at a slight angle, with his hair legs most prominent, one hand resting on an alter or rock, other held to his chest. Reverse smooth showing this came from a sarcophagus or other panel. 7-5/8" H.
Provenance: Ex-private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
