Roman Empire, ca 1st to 2nd century CE, reportedly found near the famous ancient site of Pergamon. Stunning section of a sarcophagus in the form of a woman's head. She looks left, long curly locks flow to her shoulder, the musculature of her neck clearly visible, her hair tied back into a bun, classically beautiful face. 7"H. Custom mount.
Provenance: Ex-private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
