Description
APULIAN GREEK RED FIGURE COLUMN KRATER, South Italy, 3rd century AD. Side A depicts a naked running satyr wearing a wreath and holding a situla and laden phial looking back towards a draped maenad in pursuit holding a tympanon and thyrsos, a fillet hanging in the field. Side B depicts two youths, each holding a staff and wrapped closely in a himation facing each other. The neck of the krater covered with ivy leaf tendrils with berries. Details in added white and yellow. 12.5 x 14 inches. This wonderful Greek vase comes with a Paris passport from the Louvre Museum indicated it is legal for it to leave the country.
Provenance: The Princeton Collection: The collection of an international business executive assembled in London and New York c. 1980-2000. All pieces in the collection were purchased from established ancient art dealers or auction houses.
