Description
Palmyra, current day Syria, ca. 3rd century CE. Of a princess or aristocratic youth, hair in rows pulled back and tied in a bun. She is attired in himation over a chiton, flowing in neat rows. A large and lovely example of the art from this Roman territory. 17-1/2" H x 13" W.
Provenance: Ex-private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
