Description
1st Lt. Joseph W. del Alamo: Group of Eight Military Commissions, Three Signed by Presidents, and Two Acceptance Letters. Included in the lot are three commissions signed by Woodrow Wilson (two total) and William H. Taft. The earliest, signed by Taft and measuring 20.5" x 16", dated January 16, 1911, appoints del Alamo "provisionally, Second Lieutenant in the Philippine Scouts." The two Wilson signed commissions, both measuring 15.5" x 19.75" and dated January 14, 1915, and December 19, 1916, appoint del Alamo to second and first lieutenant (respectively) in the Philippine Scouts." With additional documents and appointments, as shown, not signed by presidents. Little is known of del Alamo prior to his appointment as a corporal in the U.S. Army's Signal Corps on December 16, 1905. He rose to the rank of sergeant on January 2, 1907. During the First World War he was transferred to the 13th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Division, as first a second and, later, a first lieutenant, but was killed on October 5, 1918 - one month before the war's end. He is buried at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in Romagne, France.
