Fort Sumter Signature Group. This fascinating collection consists of eight clipped signatures from men, both Union and Confederate, who had a hand in inaugurating the Civil War. Names include Confederate commander Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard, 3.5" x 1" (sight); Union commander Maj. Robert Anderson, 2.75" x .75" (sight); Gen. Roger A. Pryor, 2.5" x .75" (sight), who received the offer to fire the first shot, but refused; Confederate soldier Edmund Ruffin, 2.75" x .5" (sight), who fired the opening shot; Gen. Abner Doubleday, 4.5" x 1.25" (sight), who fired the first return shot; Senator Louis T. Wigfall, 4" x 1" (sight), and Gen. Stephen D. Lee, 5.5" x 1.75" (sight), who offered terms of surrender to the fort; and Union Gen. Jefferson C. Davis, 4" x .75" (sight), who received the terms of surrender from Lee. Matted with engraved portraits of Beauregard and Anderson, an engraving of the battle, and two U.S. service patches to an overall size of 34" x 26". From the Collection of a Minnesota Gentleman.
