During the Art Nouveau period glass art was one of the most popular forms of artistic expression. The resolution of the strict division between high art and crafts as well as new technical innovations in the processing of glass inspired many artists, including famous names such as Tiffany, Gallé and Lalique, to use this diverse material I unprecedented ways. They created glass objects of every kind – lamps, bowls, vases, figurines – often elaborately decorated. The present chalice made of colorless glass boasts floral motifs in enamel painting with gold – a typical design of the time. The plain form, a short stem on a round foot holding the wide, shallow bowl, yields precedence to the fine ornamentation.
The cup is in good condition with light signs of age and wear. The paint is a little rubbed in places. The height measures 12.5 cm. (tfa)
