Ebony
Carved and pierced back decorated with profuse floral motifs and turned columns, scalloped back with pinnacles
Carved rails with floral motifs, turned legs and stretchers
Canned seat
India, The Coromandel Coast/Ceylon, ca. 1640-60
Note: These chairs are referred by Amir Jaffer as being of type “A”. A typology characterized by a profused carved decoration in very low relief.
There are two exemples of this chairs in the Asmollean Museum, reputedly brought to England by Catherine of Braganza in 1661.
