Description
Size: 14 ft x 15 ft 7 in (4.27 m x 4.75 m) - French Art Deco Rug, France, c. 1920’s - Here is an Art Deco composition that was woven in France during the second decade of the twentieth century. An especially large piece, this French rug is characterized primarily by its deceptively simple composition, which consists of a series of concentric rectangular figures, the centermost of which is decorated with a flowing floral medallion. This concentric rectangular design is both reminiscent of and distinctly separate from traditional Oriental carpet design, for rather than featuring a series of borders, a field, and a central medallion, this piece instead features a greatly deconstructed version of that traditional arraignment, with open stretches of solid color standing in the place of richly detailed fields and borders. Even the medallion is something of a deconstruction, appearing almost as the image of a medallion rather than a true medallion.
