Collection of Women’s Suffrage Leaders in “Stanhope” Images c. 1920, Complete Set of Five Early Women’s Suffrage “Stanhope” Photos, Lot of 5, Choice Extremely Fine. Set of five “Stanhopes,” optical novelties that individually hold microscopic portrait images of Lucy Stone, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Anna Howard Shaw, and Carrie Chapman Catt. Each Stanhope device resembles a 1.5” long, miniature telescope, with a cylindrical construction of brass-like metal with perfectly form-fitted leather sheaths to aid in handling while viewing the black image on glass. These are stamped, “Made in France,” indicative of their manufacture in the country that was the world’s most progressive in lens works and camera production during the period. A peek into any one of the Stanhope quintets reveals the view of a pioneer who campaigned for women’s rights. Artifacts of the Suffrage and early women’s rights movement are avidly collected, and rare examples such as these command a very high price. (5 items) ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
