Apollo 15 FLOWN "Original" 35mm Robbins Medallion

Description
FLOWN "Original" 35mm. Sterling Silver Robbins Medallion (No. 45) with original plastic case and with the incorrect spelling of "Apennine" on the reverse. The medallions for Apollo 15 were designed by Italian designer Emilio Pucci. It was not realized until it was too late that the mission's landing site, Hadley-Apennine, had been misspelled on the medallion. Apennine had been spelled with two "P's". He had also included his initial on the front of the medallion. 127 of these original medallions were FLOWN and are numbered 1 to 127. These 127 medallions were struck from an ingot of silver that was salvaged from "The Plate Fleet", a flotilla of Spanish ships headed back to Spain carrying a treasure-trove of South American and Mexican treasure. The fleet was wrecked and sunk by a hurricane off the Florida coast near Cape Canavera in 1715. The balance of the medallions with the minting errors, Nos. 128-304, were returned to the Robbins Company to be melted down. The Robbins Company had a new die cut, deleting Pucci's initials and correcting the spelling of Apennine. The new medallions were restruck from regular silver stock and were numbered 128-304. These new medallions were not FLOWN. Exceedingly rare. A similar medallion (No. 44) from the Scott Family collection realized almost $7,500 in our May 2003 sale. FLOWN? Yes
