Item Details
Description
Sterling Silver (unnumbered, in original plastic case #281) This is the second rarest FLOWN (98 FLOWN, 202 unFLOWN) Robbins medallion. Only the Apollo 17 medallions (80 FLOWN) are rarer. The obverse of this medallion depicts the NASA vector which symbolizes teamwork, an eagle representing the USA, and the lunar surface. The names of the crew and sixteen stars representing the mission number border the emblems. The reverse contains the launch, landing and splashdown dates. According to Robbins medallion guru, Howard Weinberger (whose 1999 book "The Robbins Medallions / FLOWN Treasure from the Apollo Space Program" is the acknowledged reference regarding these medallions), new research brought to light since the book was published indicates that up to perhaps 10 examples of unnumbered Apollo 16 medallions (this is only the fourth recorded example) may exist. There is no known explanation as to why these are unnumbered but the fault may lie with human error. As a result, it is only through provenance that the actual issue of FLOWN vs. unFLOWN can be answered. In either case, this is a rare and highly desirable addition to any collection. A similar (numbered) medallion realized almost $9,800 in the Aurora May sale. Ex: The Robert Overmyer Estate collection. FLOWN? Yes
