Turn of the Twentieth Century - Here is an antique Kurdish piece woven by the Kurds of Persia around the turn of the twentieth century. Kurdish rugs are among the most collectible and sought-after antique rug styles, as they have long been valued for their aesthetic authenticity, for their commitment to tribal to design. Tribal design in antique Oriental rugs does not necessarily imply any one design style, but rather suggests that the composition is influenced by and woven with tribal design preferences, which may include abstract geometric figures, bright colors, and a marked asymmetry. This delightful example from Persian Kurdistan boasts most of these characteristics - most especially the penchant of abstract, geometric figures. The best such example here is in the large central medallion, which is an especially asymmetrical piece. Set against a soft red field, it stands out boldly. Further tribal design elements appear throughout the field as well as the borders.
