Publication of the book was made possible by a donation of Rabbi Zvi Efron and he presented this book as a gift to the mashgiach Rabbi Yehezkiel Levinstein (see dedication on the book cover). On the page before the title page are the stamps of the mashgiach Rabbi Yehezkiel Levinstein with the addition of the title “spiritual director,†and stamps of both “Yeshivat Mir†and “Yeshivat Ponevitz.â€
The story of the rescue of Yeshivat Mir during the Holocaust and its period in Shanghai are well-known. During this difficult period the mashgiach Rabbi Yehezkiel Levinstein was the spiritual leader, and during crises he was the pillar of strength of the yeshiva, imbuing faith and hope in the students. In terms of the learning, yeshiva students say this was the most productive period ever, as they had nothing else to do other than sink into the study of the Rambam and the Talmud. This book of the Rambam was edited by the heads of the yeshiva during its years in the exile in Shanghai.
