Viewers familiar with the city of Moscow will have an easier time appreciating the nuances of the artist’s design. Vera Mukhina’s famous Rabochii i Kolkhoznitsastatue stands in front of the VDNKh exhibition complex that in Soviet times was dedicated to showcasing the achievements of the Soviet economy.<br
We know of several of Gorpenko’s posters, produced individually or in collaboration with such artists as Nikolai Denisov, but reference books describe him as a battle-scene and monumentalist painter associated with the Military Artists Studio. He designed mosaics for the Victory monument in Moscow, and for the Memorial Hall of the Soviet War Memorial in Berlin. This latter project earned him the 1949 Stalin Prize in Arts.
