Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, 300 BCE - 1000 CE. This stone metate is unusual for its form. The ancient artisan chiseled a piece of stone into a large lozenge-shaped grinding stone or slab with a smooth arcuated depression that has no legs. Metates were traditionally used by women of Mesoamerica for grinding maize with a horizontal grinding motion and other organic materials during food preparation. 15"L x 7-1/2"W at widest x 2-3/4"D
