Description
Pre-Columbian, Inca, Central Peru, ca. 1300-1500 CE. By the dawn of Inca reign, Peru had been the seat of outstanding pottery production for thousands of years. The Moche had developed the stirrup vessel to an artform full of expression and fascinating insight to the ancient Andean culture. The Inca followed in this tradition, and oftentimes advanced in technique and presented intriguing iconography. This piece is unique in that the artisan featured an unusual square arc form for the body upon which perches a whiskered jaguar whose tail becomes the handle upon which a playful seabird has alighted. The arc is square which is highly unusual in all Peruvian cultures! All in rich blackware with fine stone polished metallic appearance, it is simply magnificent! 6-1/2"H x 8"W
