Item Details
Description
Patagonia Land of Fire (Tierra del Fuego) and Falkland Islands by Jenotte. South America. 1840Print from steel engraving titled „Patagonie Terre du Feu et iles malouines par Jenotte“.Drawn by Jenotte.Notes: Meridien de Paris. 1-2.Patagonia is a region located at the southern end of South America, shared by Argentina and Chile. The region comprises the southern section of the Andes mountains as well as the deserts, steppes and grasslands east of this southern portion of the Andes. The Colorado River is usually considered its northern boundary in Argentine territory. To the west, it includes the territory of Valdivia through Tierra del Fuego archipelago. Patagonia has two coasts; a western one towards the Pacific Ocean and an eastern one towards the Atlantic Ocean. The name Patagonia comes from the word patagón used by Magellan in 1520 to describe the native people that his expedition thought to be giants. It is now believed that the people he called the Patagons were Tehuelches, who tended to be taller than Europeans of the time. The Argentine portion of Patagonia includes the provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut and Santa Cruz, as well as the eastern portion of Tierra del Fuego archipelago and the southernmost department of Buenos Aires province: Patagones. The Argentine politico-economic Patagonic Region includes the Province of La Pampa. The Argentine researcher Miguel Doura observed that possibly the name, Patagonia derives from the ancient Greek region of modern Turkey call Paflagonia, possible home of the "patagon" personage in the chivalric romances "Primaleon" printed in 1512, ten years before Magellan arrived these southern lands. Hypothesis was accepted and published in the "Journal of Philology New Hispanica" in the year 2011. Approx. image size 22, 5 x 17, 8/27, 5 x 22, 6 cm.
