Description
Henry Farrer (1844-1903) was an English-born American artist known for his tonalist watercolor landscapes and etchings. Original etching whose title is “SUNSET, GOWANUS BAY”, circa 1880, image approx. 6-1/8 x 9-1/4 in. plus margins. Sunset, Gowanus Bay is typical of Henry Farrer's best marine etchings. Most noteworthy is the solid detailing of the ship combined with the strong atmospheric effects of the setting sun upon both sky and water. As a creative etcher Henry Farrer was ahead of most of his American contemporaries, particularly in his use of plate-tone and construction of light and shade. Printed on thick wove paper. Numerous foxing in margin areas. The image area is very good. Unsigned signed as usual. Etchings during the 1880s - 1890s and earlier were seldom signed in pencil. The practice of signing etchings in pencil began, for the most part, in the early 20th century. To be sure there were some special editions before 1900 signed in pencil but these are fairly rare.
