later Hebrew engraving ‘Jerusalem month Lyar 5687’, corresponds to September 1927. Large parchment Torah scroll, text written by hand in black ink in Hebrew Ashkenazim block letters, sewn with the tendons of kosher animals
Wound on two beech rods ‘trees of life’ or ‘azzey hachaim’ with wooden cuffs and handles at the ends
Plain lower handles; cuffs with eight point-like bone inlays and turned brass thread inserts
Upper Rimon crafted from turned wood and bone elements, bone crown-shaped end piece
Corresponding cuff with brass plate showing the hebrew engraving ???????, ???? ????, ? ???"? ‘Jerusalem month Lyar 5687’, corresponding to September 1927

The present parchment Torah scroll, the central ceremonial item of the Judaism, is exceptionally well preserved

The Torah scroll containing the five books of Moses in Hebrew is traditionally written by a trained scribe and read in the Jewish services. The present role with two beech rods is characterized by the well-preserved parchment. The cuffs with their decorative bone inlays and turned brass thread inserts and the Rimon crafted from turned wood and bone elements are particularly beautiful. The corresponding cuff is fitted with an engraved brass plate, showing the inscription ???????, ???? ????, ? ???"? (‘Jerusalem month Lyar 5687’), which corresponds to September 1927.


The Torah scroll is in good condition, showing some repairs and losses of the inlay work. The second Rimon was replaced at a later date. The height of a Torah scroll is 92 cm.
