‘Snowball vases’ of this kind fascinated collectors in the 19th century and have even been manufactured by various manufacturers. The present pair was modeled after the famous Meissen vase by J. J. Kaendler designed in 1740. A very fine example, presumably from the manufactory Jacob Petit in Fontainebleau.
This pair of vases was presumably made by the French porcelain manufacturer Jacob Petit in the second half of the 19th century. The bulbous bodies are raised on round feet. The sides are completely covered with small snowball flowers and additionally decorated with spheres of blue-rimmed snowball blossoms and lifelike three-dimensional goldfinches and other songbirds. The high dome-shaped covers are decorated in the same manner, additionally with red berries and each crowned with a large three-dimensional parrot. A fine and incredibly elaborate decoration imitating the iconic Meissen model by J. J. Kaendler!
The vases are marked on the base with underglaze blue crossed swords, retraced in overglaze blue. Both are generally in good condition with signs of age. There is gold wear and some restored areas as well as some losses. The height is 56.5 cm. (tfa)
