In 1833, Samuel Morse developed the first electromagnetic telegraph, which first was able to send only ten numbers. The first code with letters emerged in 1838. The ‘American Morse Code’ was used from 1844 to the 1960s by the telegraph companies and American railroads. The present machine presumably originates from England and resembles a pigeon clock, as the recording is also effectuated on strips of paper.
The machine is in good working condition, but long-term functionality cannot be guaranteed. It shows light wear through use. The wooden box shows traces of an inactive woodworm infestation. The dimensions of the box are 19.5 x 40.2 x 17.5 cm.
