Beautiful collection of snuff boxes made of brass, with biblical and mechanical protection

The oval brass tobacco box dates to the 19th century. It has the shape of a safe with three engraved dials and pointers on the flush hinged lid with a round sliding knob decorated in relief. The cover can only be opened when the ‘times’ half past ten, five and nine o’clock are set (with the three-pointed side of the pointers). The box is tin-plated on the inside, with an iron cover to the lock mechanism. Two of the snuff boxes date to 18th century Holland.

One is made entirely of brass, of octagonal form with a hinged lid and engraved with biblical scenes and lettering e.g. the finding of the young Moses. The base shows a depiction of the bronze serpent. The Sides depicting the twelve apostles.

The second Dutch snuffbox is bicolor and of rectangular shape with rounded sides. It is engraved all-around and features a beautiful color play due to the combination of copper and brass. It depicts biblical scenes including David with rich lettering on the cover and base. The sides depict the twelve apostles, ‘de 12 Apostele vaer Kristus’.



The small box is in very good condition with slight age-related wear. It measures 80 x 50 x 16 mm and weighs approx. 71.2 grams. The medium-size box shows some wear and small dents to the base. It measures 140 x 55 x 29 mm and weighs approx. 140 grams. The large box shows some wear and dents, the front side is detached from the base. It measures 175 x 47 x 35 mm and has a weight of approx. 220 grams. (tfa)
