Elegant salver of very heavy quality and excellent provenance
The present silver George III salver was manufactured ??in 1807 by William Simons in London. It is a classic, deep dish of solid quality with a curved edge and a cord belt. To the underside of the flag are mounted three stylized dolphins as stands. The mirror shows an engraved arms of alliance referring to the original owner, Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, second Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1797-1861), and his wife Lady Mary Campbell of Breadalbane with the banner ‘PRO DEO ET PATRIA’ [For God and the Fatherland] and two shield holders. The flag bears an engraved crest.
The plate is hallmarked with the maker's mark of William Simons, the London city mark, the date letter M (1807), the sterling standard mark and the George III duty mark on the underside. It is in very good condition, showing only minor wear. The height of the salver is 6 cm, and the diameter is 25 cm. The weight is approximately 1000 grams.
