Giuseppe Bessi (1857-1922)

Giuseppe Bessi was one of the most important exponents of the Salon sculpting. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. In 1879, he opened a workshop in Volterra and produced sculptural works ??from alabaster, marble, onyx and bronze. He also crafted everyday objects such as chess sets and lamps. In his works, he combined forms of neo-classicism and Art Nouveau. From 1891 to 1910, Bessi worked as a director of the Art Academy of Volterra. The university is the only art school for alabaster works in the world. Bessi’s works were already internationally in demand during his lifetime, especially in the early 20th century, when numerous replicas of his works were created. Today, works by Bessi are part of major museum collections, including the St. Petersburg Hermitage. A large collection of his work is exhibited in the Ecomuseo dell'Alabastro in Volterra.
