lithographic print of drawing by Raphael entitled The Massacre of the Innocents, originally drawn c.1510

Print size inches: 9.3 x 5.6 together with lithographic print of drawing by Raphael entitled Christ’s Charge to Peter, originally drawn c.1514
Acquired by George III, King of the United Kingdom (1738-1820). Part of the collection bought from Consul Joseph Smith in 1762.Red chalk (0ffset). Made by the artist from his original life study for the Cartoon 'Christ's Charge to St. Peter'. Seven of the ten cartoons survive from a series of ten commissioned by Pope X to serve as designs for tapestries illustrating scenes from the lives of St. Peter and St. Paul. Produced in Brussels, the tapestries were woven from the back and the offset would have helped Raphael to see how his design would look in reverse as per the end product.
Print size inches: 9.2 x 6.5
