Description
Pencil, on light blue wove paper, with ruled border Circa 1865 Unframed 14 x 42 cm. (5 1/2 x 16 1/2 in) Provenance: private collection, UK. Literature: cf. Ormond, Leone and Richard, Lord Leighton , Yale University Press, London, 1975, p.156 -3 The current drawing is a study for the large oil painting The Syracusan Bride Leading Wild Beasts in Procession to the Temple of Diana , which Lord Leighton executed in 1865-66 (Private collection). The drawing is an example of one of several important stages in Leighton s creative process, beginning with individual figure studies (examples in the Leighton House Museum), moving onto composition studies such as the current lot, then oil sketches (see Dahesh Museum of Art for oil sketch for The Syracusan Bride), before finally executing the finished painting.
