Description
Half-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Iron Oxide Decoration, Stamped "BOSTON," Jonathan Fenton or Frederick Carpenter, Boston, MA, late 18th century, ovoid jug with coggled twisted rope motif around the shoulder, heavily-tooled spout, and the impressed city name "BOSTON", the shoulder and base with dipped iron-oxide slip. Desirable size and coggling. A particularly early example of Boston stoneware, featuring a "B" in "BOSTON" the same size as the remainder of the name. 1 1/4" chip to front surface, probably in-the-firing. Some wear and fine-grained exfoliation to surface. Two in-the-firing contact marks to handle. Minor glazed-over spout nick and other light spout wear, all of which appears to be in-the-firing. H 9 3/4".
