Item Details
Description
Exceedingly Rare Diminutive Stoneware Oyster Jar with Cobalt-Highlighted Advertising, "D.J. & Co. No. 24 / LUMBER STREET / N. YORK," Thomas Commeraw, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, cylindrical jar with inset rim to allow for a canning lid, the body impressed with the cobalt-highlighted advertising "D.J. AND CO. / NO 24 / LUMBER STREET / N. YORK". This jar was made by Thomas Commeraw to hold oysters sold by African-American oysterman, Daniel Johnson, and is the smallest example we have seen, as well as the only Commeraw oyster jar we are aware of bearing applied cobalt decoration in the advertising. An important example of early Manhattan stoneware, representing one of the earliest groups of advertising stoneware produced in this country. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased years ago in the Northeastern U.S. Rim chips. Large 1 3/4" base chip on reverse along with a few other small base chips on reverse. Height 5 3/8".
