Condition: Silversmith Clemens Friedell (1872-1963) was born in Crescent City, LA, to Austrian immigrant parents. The Friedell family returned to Vienna when Clemens was three years old, and it was in Vienna that he served a seven-year silversmithing apprenticeship. He returned to the United States at the age of 20 and took a position with a jeweler in San Antonio, TX, where he remained for nine years. In 1900 Friedell was hired by Gorham Mfg. Co. in Providence, RI to be a chaser for their high-end Martele line. He worked in the chasing room for about seven years until he was laid off in 1907 as the result of downsizing due to the economic depression. Friedell eventually made his way to the west coast and it was in affluent Pasadena, CA where he established a shop under his own name in 1911. His first major commission occurred only shortly after he opened his shop, when he was hired by brewer E.R. Maier to design and produce an extensive 107-piece service to be decorated with orange blossoms in a Martele-like style. Friedell spent a year creating the "Blossom" service for Maier, and quickly thereafter gained recognition in the local equestrian circles form whom he produced numerous trophies for the next two decades. Friedell relocated his shop to Pasadena's prestigious Hotel Maryland in 1916, and remained there until his first retirement five years later. In 1927 he reopened his shop, this time selling objects in the art deco and neo-classical styles as opposed to the more art nouveau works he had created for Gorham and in his post-Martele years. With his loyal, local client-base Friedell was able to remain prosperous throughout the Great Depression and until his 1963 death.
