Description
original drawing in pen, ink and watercolour, signed in ink lower left corner, also titled and signed on mount "Rex.J.Whistler pinx.t AD1925" in ink, c.255 x 165mm., a few small spots to sky area, framed and glazed, [Not in Whistler & Fuller], 1925. In October 1924 Whistler accompanied the tubercular Stephen Tennant, his fellow pupil at the Slade School of Art, to Switzerland for his health, Whistler's first trip abroad. They continued on to Italy, staying in San Remo on the Italian Riviera until after Easter, during which time Whistler managed to travel to Rome, Pisa and Florence, where he was bowled over by the beauty of Italy and in particular Baroque Rome. This watercolour shows a man running (a little strangely) down a narrow Italian street being fired at by Italian fascists.
