2 vol., number 152 of 195 copies on hand-made paper from an edition limited to 205, title-vignettes, 12 engraved plates, 5 maps, 4 head- and 4 tail-pieces by Rex Whistler, the 12 plates hand-coloured by the artist, Eddie Marsh's copy inscribed in ink by Whistler on verso of frontispieces "the plates coloured for Eddie by Rex with his love", also dated 1931 in vol.2, with 2 accompanying pencil notes from Whistler concerning the delivery of vol.1 loosely inserted " I have just rushed round on getting your card - to find you out - but I might have guessed you would be first-nighting. Rex. I have no brown paper to wrap the book in, but I thought you would rather I left it now it is here.", very slight offsetting, original half viridian niger with vellum boards, by Wood, t.e.g., others uncut, a little soiled and slightly rubbed at edges, vol.2 with a few small spots and gouges to vellum on lower board, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, morocco labels on spine, [Whistler & Fuller 426], large 4to, Cresset Press, 1930. Most copies of the book were coloured under the artist's supervision. The colouring in this copy, by Whistler himself, is far more delicate and subtle than in those coloured by others. Sir Edward Marsh (1872-1953), civil servant, patron of the arts and man of letters who edited several anthologies of verse and acted as Rupert Brooke's literary executor. He served as Private Secretary to Churchill for many years and knew many of the writers and artists of the early 20th century. Exhibited at Rex Whistler. The Triumph of Fancy , Brighton Museum, 2006.
