Item Details
Description
comprising: Frontispiece to vol.1 (Gulliver and Capt. Pritchard drinking outside an inn), c.235 x 183mm., head-piece to Part III (Gulliver seated surveying a landscape with the island of Laputa in the air above), c.90 x 190mm., and tail-piece to Part IV (Gulliver at stable door talking to his horses), c.90 x 195mm., all mounted on wooden blocks with Cresset Press labels on verso, [c.1930]; with a proof of the prospectus with plate coloured by hand and a few pencil notes obscured by paper tape (slightly soiled and browned, with traces of paste to lower margin of final page where previously mounted) ; a dummy binding for the book of blank leaves of hand-made paper in half brown niger over vellum boards with spine lettered in gilt (rubbed, spine faded) ; and a copy of David Herbert's 1984 edition of 'Gulliver's Travels' using Whistler's reduced illustrations with correspondence between W.R.Fletcher, Herbert and Laurence Whistler loosely inserted concerning the engravings and their colouring, large 4to & 4to (6) The large copper plate was used for the prospectus. As it states therein, "It is to be regretted that the very high cost of copper-plate reproductions prohibits their use in this prospectus, but it is hoped that these Collographic reproductions will give a fair indication of the charm of these very interesting illustrations." The other two copper plates were possibly made up for the prospectus but unused, or for advertisements. The correspondence in the last item is interesting because Fletcher corrects Laurence Whistler's introduction regarding the colouring of the plates and the method of reproduction. Whistler had stated that all the plates in the finished work were printed using photogravure but Fletcher disputes this as he owned all the original copper plates (as used for his own reprinting of the plates in 1970) and also the three blocks for the prospectus.
