first edition , frontispiece and pictorial title by Rex Whistler and printed in blue, inscribed by Whistler to Dame Adelaide Livingstone "To Adelaide with love from Rex Rome 1934" within papal cartouche in pencil with red, blue and green crayon on front free endpaper, original cloth, rubbed, spine browned and rather worn with vertical crease, with excellent pictorial dust-jacket by Whistler (possibly from another copy but with similar vertical crease to spine), [Whistler & Fuller 466], 8vo, J.M.Dent, 1934. Dame Adelaide Livingstone (d.1970), organiser of the Peace Ballot in 1934-35 to assess the feeling in Britain concerning Germany and the rise of Adolf Hitler. She had taken Whistler and Kenneth Rae, who worked for the publisher Richard Cobden-Sanderson, away to Rome in 1934 at her expense; having asked Rae what he would ask for if he could have anything he wanted, he replied "To go to Rome with Rex!".
