Item Details
Description
first edition, first printing, with "chatter" for "echolalia" on p. 60, "northern" for "southern" on p. 119, "it's" for "its" and "away" for "away." on p.165, "sick in tired" for "sickantired" on p. 205, and "Union Street station" for "Union Station" on p. 211, original green cloth lettered in gilt, an excellent, sharp and bright copy, first printing dust jacket designed by Francis Cugat , with the lowercase "j" in "jay Gatsby" on the back panel hand-corrected in ink, expertly restored by Richard Reeve Restoration Ltd. resulting in a superior copy, [Bruccoli A11.1.a; Connolly, The Modern Movement 48], 8vo, New York, Scribners, 1925. The great American 'Jazz Age' novel, characteristically described by the author as " about the best American novel ever written ." The iconic dust-jacket design by Cugat is without question one of the most recognised and renowned jacket designs in modern literature, embodying and capturing the spirit of the novel perfectly. The artwork even contributed to the book's composition, as evidenced by a letter Fitzgerald wrote to his publisher: "For Christ's sake don't give anyone that jacket you're saving for me. I've written it into the book." This is perhaps most apparent in his description of Daisy Buchanan as the "girl whose disembodied face floated along the dark cornices and blinding signs". The dust-jacket is notoriously scarce, and often when found is either in poor, torn condition or crudely restored or repaired, in part a result of the jacket being very slightly over-sized for the actual book. This copy had suffered some loss to the top edge of the upper panel near the spine with similar sized loss to the centre of the top edge of the lower panel, with some further loss to the spine, but fortunately was largely intact, suffering almost no loss to the jacket's text, and has retained a richness of colour and tone often lost over time. The professional restoration has resulted in one of the best looking examples of this modern classic to come up for auction. The book is presented in a modern cloth drop-back box containing in a hidden compartment a photographically illustrated booklet by the restorer discussing the restoration and showing ¾fore' and ¯ter' images. The spine of the box bears a leather label titled in gilt to the same style font as the book & jacket.
