Description
first edition, Louie Burrows' copy with her annotations to c.15pp. and with additional autograph note, original cloth, some light staining to covers, dust-jacket, spine slightly browned, spine ends and corners chipped, 1955; and 2 others, Louie Burrows' copies of Lawrence biographies, one with further notes in the margins, 8vo (3)⁂ Jessie Chambers (1887-1944) met Lawrence whilst studying at the Ilkeston Centre, Derbyshire, for her teaching certificate. They became very close, reading and taking long walks together; Lawrence would later say of Jessie "You were the anvil on which I hammered myself out.". Indeed, Chambers proved instrumental in Lawrence's development, collecting scraps of his poetry which she eventually sent to Ford Maddox Ford at the English Review, these were well received and this effectively kickstarted Lawrence's literary career. Chambers continued to advise Lawrence on his early writings, however she became increasingly unhappy with the course he was pursuing and eventually broke off their friendship in or around the summer of 1910.Louie Burrows (1888-1962) became a friend of Lawrence's whilst they were studying together in 1902 and accompanied him to study at Nottingham. They eventually became engaged in 1910, a few days before the death of Lawrence's mother. The engagement lasted until 1912, when Lawrence met Frieda Weekley, the woman who would eventually become his wife; the two eloped together to the continent that year, and his engagement to Burrows was broken off. Although Burrows would never see Lawrence again, he had clearly left a significant impact on her life - when Lawrence died in 1930, Burrows travelled twice across Europe to visit his grave in Venice.A fascinating and revealing account of life with D.H.Lawrence.The notes range from those fleshing out descriptions of walks with Lawrence to revealing asides on Jessie Chambers' narrative: when Chambers' describes Lawrence's rather melodramatic response to a Sarah Bernhardt performance (which he had attended with Burrows), Burrows comments in the margin: "Was this true?" and when mention is made of Lawrence going abroad in 1912, Burrows adds "with Mrs Weekley".
