PAIR OF HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT MINIATURE PORTRAITS BY MARIA LOUISA WAGNER (NY, 1815-1888) - Reuben Hyde Walworth (1788-1867), the last Chancellor of the State of New York, and his new wife Sarah Ellen (Smith), widow of Congressman John J. Hardin, who was killed at the battle of Buena Vista in Mexico, 1847. Both oval, oil on card, dated 1850, his done in Saratoga Springs, NY (his home), hers in Albany. In original frames, under glass, with inscriptions on the original backs. 5 1/4" x 4 1/2" & 4 1/4" x 3 1/2" images. Walworth was also President of the American Temperance Union and Grand Master Mason of NY. Wagner learned to paint from her brother Daniel whom she supported for life, and died a few weeks after him of grief. They painted many important figures of their day.
