Description
A WATERLINE MODEL OF H.M. SUBMARINE CONQUEROR [1969]
constructed from carved laminated wood finished in black and depicted with forward steering vanes and conning tower with officers' and communication aerials passing through a calm moulded seascape with painted white foam wash, on raised wooden display base -- 6 x 48 x 13in. (15 x 122 x 33cm.)
The 4000 ton 'Valiant' Class nuclear attack submarine Conqueror was laid down by Cammell Laird, 5th December 1967, launched eighteen months later and completed in November 1971. Perhaps her greatest moment has also remained her most controversial - the sinking of the General Belgrano on 2nd May 1982 during the Falklands campaign has provoked impassioned debate ever since. She was sold for breaking in 1990.
This lot will be available for viewing at Imperial Road.
++Fine overall condition; ensign loose.
