Description

ENGLISH STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERY FIGURAL GROUP OF UNCLE TOM AND EVA, the figure of Uncle Tom seated on a tree stump, hat in his left hand, with Little Eva standing on his right knee, each embracing the other, painted in colorful enamels, on a rounded square self-base, molded "Uncle Tom" identifying placard to front. Unmarked. Circa 1855. 10 3/8" H.

Literature: Fenichell, Jill "Fragile Lessons: Ceramic and Porcelain Representations of Uncle Tom's Cabin," Ceramics in America, 2006' illustrates similar objects.

Provenance: Property of a Virginia private collector.

Condition

Excellent condition, three inch crack behind Tom's right knee, original to firing.
