James Monroe as Secretary of War & State July 4th, 1814 War of 1812 United States Travel Payment to a Soldier
JAMES MONROE (1758-1831). 5th President of the United States. During the War of 1812, Monroe held the critical roles of Secretary of State and the Secretary of War under President James Madison.
July 4, 1814-Dated War of 1812 Period, Manuscript Document Endorsement Signed, “Jas Monroe” as Secretary of State, measuring 8.5” x 7.25” (by sight), framed to an overall 26.25” x 22.25”, at Washington City, Fine. This two-part Document bringing a Captain C. Larrabee into Washington, D.C. and paying him for transportation of baggage dated on July 4th, 1814 and reads:

“The United States to C. Larrabee, Capt 4th July to transportation of baggage from Plattsburgh N Y (New York) to the City of Washington distance 541 miles at $8 per hundred - $43.28 -- Admitted Jas. Monroe.”

The next notation below shows a receipt of the funds on November 9, 1814, as his duplicate receipt. Larrabee, who was a Captain in the 4th Infantry, personally signs at the bottom of this Document that he received the $43.28 due him and having received his items is both paid and free of that obligation. Matted and framed with a portrait with facsimile signature of James Monroe. There is some trivial ink splatter and old tape reinforcement show-through from the hidden verso used on some fold splits. James Monroe's signature and endorsement are incredibly vivid and very bold in deep heavy brown ink. (Not examined out of frame.) This remarkable July 4th (1814) War of 1812 James Monroe Signed Document is extremely historic and worthy of a significant premium. A “Museum” piece that is nicely framed and ready to hand upon display.
The month after Monroe signed this document, the British burned Washington, including the White House, and occupied the city. However, a magazine explosion and a tornado repulsed them! Their occupation, which began on August 26, 1814, lasted less than 26 hours.
