Circa 1783 Historic Pictorial Textile “America Presenting at the Alter of Liberty Medallions of her Illustrious Sons”
c. 1783 Revolutionary War Era, George Washington Printed Pictorial Memorial Textile on Cotton Linen, “Threads of History “ listed and illustrated as number 6 on page 50,” titled “America Presenting at the Altar of Liberty - Medallions of Her Illustrious Sons," Very Fine.

This is a very rare, original section of Printed Pictorial English Cotton Textile entitled, “America Presenting at the Alter of Liberty - Medallions of her Illustrious Sons.” This historic Printed Textile shows as a wide section, measuring about 12.25” tall x 28” wide with Brown Print upon off-White Cotton Linen which has very even overall tone. This historic 12.25"" x 28" section of "America Presenting at the Altar of Liberty Medallions of Her Illustrious Sons" is with an early handwritten attached note detailing exhibit appearances of similar pieces. It is listed as item number 6 on page 50 in “Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth 1775 to the Present,” as published by the Smithsonian Institution. There are only a few trivial internal short separations, a few dark spots and the outer border edges have been carefully hemmed long ago for better display.

The standing figure of Washington is modeled after John Trumbull’s 1780 work. The Illustrious Sons featured in medallion portraits include, Baron Von Steuben upon Liberty’s lap, and in ovals Gouverneur Morris and John Jay, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin (in his beloved coonskin cap), John Adams and Henry Laurens.

Overall, a nice display piece that would look excellent properly framed. There is a bit more natural tone to some areas that blends well due to the brown printing. At left George Washington is being Crowned with a Laurel Wreath by a trumpet blowing Angel with a banner above reading “WASHINGTON, AND INDEPENDANCE.” A major example of this important Period Printed Textile with glorious iconic images of our Revolutionary Period America.
