c. 1790 Federal Period, Benjamin Franklin & George Washington, “The Apotheosis of Franklin,” Memorial Historic Textile depicting Benjamin Franklin with George Washington, About Extremely Fine.
Listed as Number 8, page 51, of the Smithsonian Reference book, “Threads of History” by Collins, this red printed George Washington Textile measures approx. 19.75” x 25.75" upon cotton. Titled “The Apotheosis of Franklin,” it features two richly symbolic vignettes, including Washington bearing the figure of the Indian Princess “America” in a leopard-drawn chariot, behind two American Indians and near the Liberty Tree, and Benjamin Franklin and Liberty holding a banner reading, “WHERE LIBERTY DWELLS THERE IS MY COUNTRY” near the Temple of Fame, and two cherubs holding a map of the eastern United States. Impressive in its quality, this Historic Textile has minor pulls at lower left edge along Washington’s right side, next to Liberty’s hair and above the Flag at lower center.

This historic textile was created to honor Franklin upon his death in 1790. There are other versions of this textile known to have been printed in red, blue, and also brown. Overall, the quality and condition is quite excellent for this era design and appears quite outstanding and impressive. Extremely suitable for framing and display.
