Likely Unique “Abraham Lincoln” Memorial Dog Tag
April 15th 1865-Dated, 1861/1865 Abraham Lincoln Civil War Dog-Tag, “Abraham Lincoln” Memorial Useage, Struck in Brass, Choice Very Fine or better.
29.7 mm. Type of King-182. Struck in Brass and Holed at the top for suspension, as usual. A very rare and unusual use of an 1861 Lincoln Dog Tag, inscribed circa 1865 upon the blank reverse side with an 1865-dated Abraham Lincoln “Memorial” text that reads: “WE MOURN THE NATIONS LOSS APL 15TH 1865.” Surrounding the legend is an enclosing decorative circle of hand-engraved short rays shooting outwards towards the edge rim. There are some scattered, old darker natural tone spots, yet overall a clean natural subdued brass in color with even wear.

This Abraham Lincoln Union Soldier’s “Dog Tag” design is rare enough by itself. With this unusual and historic Memorial Inscribed reverse, it is a singularly Unique piece. It is an extremely important addition to any advanced collection of Civil War Dog Tags, Abraham Lincoln and/or Civil War era related material. Ex: EAHA Auction, February 12, 2000. Since that original sale of over a decade ago, we have not seen or heard of any other being offered. An Exceedingly Rare, very likely Unique, spectacular “Abraham Lincoln” Memorial Dog Tag of Museum quality.
